Benjamin Robert Allen
Age 50, of Wilmington, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
Benjamin, known to many as “Ben”, “Benny” or “Gentle Ben,” was born on May 31, 1975, and was the beloved son of Robert B. and Sheila (Fonck) Allen of Mazon. He was raised on the family farm in rural Mazon, attended St. Rose Parochial School in Wilmington, and graduated from Joliet Catholic Academy with the Class of 1993.
Ben continued his education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and history. During his time in Wisconsin, he worked as a landscape foreman. Upon returning to Illinois, he entered the Laborers Union Local #75, where he worked proudly as a laborer.
Ben had a deep love for the outdoors. Fishing, bicycling, and sailing to Mackinac were among his favorite pastimes over the past years. He treasured many unforgettable fishing trips to Alaska and Canada, and was a devoted sports fan who especially loved the Wisconsin Badgers and the Chicago White Sox.
In addition, Ben was a true music enthusiast who enjoyed live performances, from small local bands to large concerts. At home, he took great pleasure in cooking, especially grilling, and will be fondly remembered for his exceptional soups.
A gifted storyteller and generous to a fault, Ben will be remembered as a kind and giving soul who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his parents Robert and Sheila Allen; three brothers: Bartholomew (Stella) Allen, Luke (Emily) Allen and John (Pilar) Allen; one niece and three nephews: Leigh, Charlie, Jack and Quinn and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Ben was preceded in death by his grandparents: Joseph and Rosalie Fonck and Robert, Sr. and Irene Allen, and his cousin, Josh Allen.
A private family service was held, with a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington. Reverend Josh Miller presided and Deacon Jay Plese assisted. Ben was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Wilmington.
