Age 85, of Coal City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, September 10, 2025, at her home.
Born on January 15, 1940, in Joliet, Illinois, Betty Carol was the cherished daughter of Emil Anton and Evelyn Mary (Nelson) Viano. Betty was raised in Coal City, graduating with the Class of 1958 from Coal City High School. She furthered her education at Joliet Beauty Culture and the Chicago Academy, pursuing her passion for hairstyling and cosmetology.
On October 17, 1964, Betty married Raymond Onsen at Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City. Together, they built a loving home and raised their sons in the community she loved.
A lifelong and devoted member of Assumption Parish, Betty generously volunteered for Sr. Ramie, was an active member of The Martha’s, served as an extraordinary Eucharistic minister to the homebound, and assisted as a weekend counter. She also contributed her time to the St. Vincent Table and supported school and community activities, including PTO and little league baseball, while raising her sons.
Betty owned and operated Town and Country Salon in Coal City for over 35 years, leaving a lasting impression on her clients and friends. She was also renowned for her cooking, particularly her famous fried fish, and took great joy in bringing comfort and connection to others through food. Betty loved sharing special moments with her sons at NASCAR races, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Betty’s life was a testament to love, generosity, and devotion to family, faith, and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of care, kindness, and culinary delight will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
Survivors include her three sons: Gary (Sara) Onsen, Thomas (Tammy) Onsen and Timothy Onsen, all of Coal City; granddaughters: Kimberly (Cody) Clubb, Madison (Devan) Kolthoff, Cassandra Russell (Will Vanderwall) and Meredith (Johnny) Wren; nine great grandchildren: Cole, Trent, Rylin, Mason, Nolan, Hadley, Stella, Levi and Weston; sisters-in-law: Pat Onsen, Carol Morin and Karen (Tommy) Summers, and brother-in-law: William “Billy” Onsen (Dee Perona), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law: Anna Onsen Benge (Richard Benge); father-in-law, Harold Onsen, her granddaughter, Jenna Onsen, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: James Onsen, Leonard “Swede” Onsen, Jerry Lee Onsen, Faye (Bruce) Legg, Betty Lou (Butch) Vandygriff, Wayne (Dorothy) Onsen, Richard Onsen, and David (Kathleen) Onsen.
A private family visitation was held and services were presided by Reverend Joshua Miller from Assumption Catholic Church. Cremation were accorded following the services and Betty was laid to rest with Ray in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Betty’s memory to the Assumption Building Fund, The Martha's of Assumption Parish, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
