Bill Hanley

Age 75 of Coal City, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, December 30, 2021 at his home.

Born January 22, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, William David was one of 17 children born to Joseph and Ruth (Wilson) Hanley. He was raised in Coal City and graduated from Coal City High School with the Class of 1964. Bill went on to honorably service in the United States Air Force during Vietnam from 1966 until 1968. On April 15, 1972, he married Gail Valiente in Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, and together they made their home and raised their family in Coal City.

Bill was a 50+ year member of the Concrete Masons Local 11 Area 161, from where he retired. He was the owner and operator of Bill’s Concrete, and following his retirement from the Union, he took on a position cutting grass for the Coal City School District.

A diehard fan of the Chicago White Sox, Bill also took pleasure in playing golf. He enjoyed vacationing in Florida, and when home could constantly be found driving around town, which was his regular routine of checking out the school grounds and family members homes. He was also a true Coaler enthusiast, and was his grandkids biggest fan. Bill never missed the opportunity to be at any event his grandkids participated in, and he especially enjoyed lawnmower rides with his grandson, Nash.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Gail; two daughters: Britt (Chris) Harseim of Coal City and Brooke Hanley (Eric Telander) of Oak Lawn; three grandchildren: Blake and Blaire Harseim and Nash Telander; (14) siblings: Suzanne (John) Lissy, Judy (Richard) George, Cathy (Jim) Hutchings, Tim (Jodi) Hanley, Mike (Sharon) Hanley, Jane (James) Calcaterra, Jean (Gary) Skubic, Ruth Ann (Dan) Mulhall, Albert Hanley, Patty (Terry) O’Bert, Janet (John) Peters, David Hanley, Jeff (Nancy) Hanley and Tom (Rhona) Hanley; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Sharon (John) Gilchrist, Janie (Jeff) Keck, Shirley (Larry) Wharrie, and Chuck (Karla) Valiente, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Jim Hanley and Joe Hanley, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Don and Yolanda Valiente.

The family will receive friends for a COVID observant visitation at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 N. Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City on Sunday, January 2, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 4:00 p.m. Pastor Brad Shumaker from the Coal City United Methodist Church will preside.

Per Bill’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded following the services.

He will be laid to rest in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. Those wishing to attend the military honors and committal services may assemble at the funeral home at 10:45 a.m. for a formal procession to Abraham Lincoln, which will depart at 11:00 a.m.

Those wishing to participate virtually in either the closing remarks on Sunday evening at the funeral home or the cemetery services on Thursday at Abraham Lincoln, are welcome to join the live-stream. Links to the events are available on Bill's Memorial Page.
