Carol Jean Rieck

The family of Carol Jean Rieck is saddened to announce the sudden death of their wife, mom, nana and sister on Sunday evening, May 23, 2021.

Born December 2, 1953 in Hinsdale, Illinois, Carol Jean was a daughter of David William and Dorothy Jean (Love) King. She attended Gower Grammar School in Clarendon Hills before transferring to the Henry H. Nash Elementary School in Chicago. She began her high school years at Austin High School before moving with her family, where she went on to graduate from Hinsdale Central with the Class of 1971. Carol worked for the phone company, initially as a mechanic and later transitioned into an operator. On May 2, 1981, she married Edward Rieck in the First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove, and together they settled in Wilmington and raised their family. In addition to tending to the family home, Carol gained employment as a Bus Driver and also worked in the Wilmington School District cafeteria. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington, and was active with the Downers Grove Sportsmans Club.

One who was known as a free spirit and was never afraid to try anything, Carol enjoyed activities from cooking, sewing and quilting to gardening, deer hunting and fishing. She was an accomplished billiard player who competed in Las Vegas and even had the opportunity to submerse herself in Mexican culture, spending an extended period of time in Ensenada, Mexico. Not to forget her artistic abilities and love of painting, which allowed her to sell her work locally.

Gone from our sight, Carol Jean Rieck leaves behind a collection of priceless memories to those whom she loved, and those who were blessed to know her. Her family always remained her first priority, and she cherished creating memories with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Rieck; four children: Annette Van Buskirk of Wisconsin, Amy (Joseph) Shoemaker and Eddie (Bridgette) Rieck, both of Florida, and David (Kelly) Rieck of Wilmington; (12) grandchildren: Christina, Caleb, Gabriel, Faith, Zionna, Quinn, Seth, Isabella, Jacob, Alexander, Austin and A.J.; four sisters: Sandra (Stephen) Weiner of Baltimore, Maryland, Eileen King of Lombard, Donna (David) Ohman of Lisle and Lisa King of Lockport; nieces and nephews: Ryan, Jason, Morgan, Ethan, Wyatt and Riley, and one aunt, Elsie Schultz of Lemont, as well as numerous cousins.
