Dell Raridon, Jr.

Age 94 of Wilmington, Illinois, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2023, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, Illinois. He was born on July 2, 1929, in Pontiac, Illinois to Dell Sr. and Pearl (Lighty) Raridon. Dell was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He touched the lives of many with his kind heart and cheerful disposition.

Dell grew up in Wilmington and graduated from Wilmington High School with the Class of 1945. After completing his education, he dedicated himself to serving his country. Dell served in the United States Air Force from 1950 until honorably discharged in 1955. He carried the values instilled in him during his service throughout his life. It was also during that same year he entered into the service that Dell married Joan Parkinson on December 27, 1950 in the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington. Together they made their home in Wilmington and raised their two children.

In his professional career, Dell worked as a Mechanical Technician and held positions with Argonne National Laboratory and General Electric before retiring. His expertise and dedication were greatly admired by his colleagues. Dell's passion for mechanics extended beyond the workplace; he could fix almost anything with his skillful hands, and was often fondly referred to as “Mr. Fix-It”.

Dell was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, where he served as a Deacon, Elder and sang in the choir; he served on the Wilmington School District Board of Education, where he held the position of President, and he belonged to the Wilmington American Legion.

Those who knew Dell will always remember him for his adventurous spirit. He would often embark on "over-the-hill" rides to unknown destinations for breakfast, inviting his friends to join him on these thrilling escapades. Dell would fuel not only his motorcycle but also their souls with laughter and joy along the way.

Quick-witted and ever so clever, Dell always had a line for every occasion. His infectious sense of humor brought smiles to countless faces throughout his life. Not only was he witty, but he was also incredibly caring and compassionate towards others. He had a genuine love for people and continuously went above and beyond to help those around him.

Family meant everything to Dell; it was among his proudest accomplishments. Their laughter and love brought immeasurable happiness to his life.

Dell had a soft spot for children and always held a special place in his heart for them. He spread kindness and warmth wherever he went, including the communities he was a part of. Dell enjoyed giving back to others and was known for his generosity. The impact he made on the lives around him will continue to resonate for years to come.

On top of everything else, Dell had a passion for the open road. He was a true motorcycle enthusiast and found pure joy riding his beloved Harley Davidson. The freedom he felt while cruising down the road brought him unparalleled happiness.

Outside of his career and motorcycle adventures, Dell had various hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He enjoyed boating and water skiing during the summer months, relishing in the tranquility of being out on the water. Additionally, he formed lifelong friendships with his cherished "coffee gangs" at McDonald's. Throughout the day, Dell would meet with these groups and share stories over cups of coffee. In between these meetings, he would indulge in short naps, recharging himself for the next gathering.

Dell leaves behind a legacy that will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched. He embodied kindness, courage, and a zest for life that inspired all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. May his soul find eternal peace.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Raridon-Duke of Channahon, Illinois, granddaughter Kaylin Duke of Lake Village, Indiana; one sister Doris Clifton of Biloxi, Mississippi, and his sister-in-law Jean (the late Harold) Stainbrook of Wilmington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
