Donald Chand Atorthy

Don passed of lung cancer on October 21, 2021, after almost 96 years of warmth, love, compassion, and educational ardor on Earth. He leaves behind two sons, Daniel (Barbara) and Lawrence (Julie), and four grandchildren, Daniel Jr., Alysse, Dante and Nicholas.

Born November 22, 1925, Don grew up and graduated from high school in Detroit, Michigan.  He studied at various schools in the Midwest and earned degrees in Chemistry and Electrical Engineering. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was a veteran of World War II.

He married Mary E. Sobecki in 1959 and they raised two boys together, traveling to many states in the US and eventually settling in Sothern California in 1977.  Later in life, Don met Joan Scarantino. He remained an important part of her and her family’s life until Joan’s death in 2021

Don was many great things, but the following, we think are the best: he was a teacher, passionate about learning new things and passing on knowledge to his children, friends, and anybody else whom he thought may be interested. He was a great father, demanding but he was also very nurturing. He loved his children, grandchildren, family, and friends.

He was passionate about life.  He loved to travel, within the US and abroad.

Don will always be with us in our hearts and our memories. We truly were fortunate to have him in our lives.
