Send a Sympathy Card
Donald Lee Bixby passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 29, 2025, at the age of 93.
Don was born on May 25, 1932, in Geneseo, Illinois, where he spent his formative years and graduated high school. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. He furthered his education at Northern Illinois University, receiving a Master of Business Administration. Don's insatiable quest for learning remained a lifelong passion.
Through a serendipitous introduction from a friend, Don met the love of his life, Joan. They were united in marriage on December 14, 1957, embarking on a devoted partnership that spanned over 67 years. Their married life began in Galesburg, Illinois, where Don served as Plant Engineer for his father's industrial manufacturing business, Ken Company. Life then took Don and his family to Morris, Illinois, where he and Joan raised their two daughters, Susan and Kathryn.
Don dedicated much of his career as an engineering consultant for the U.S. Small Business Administration. Upon retirement, Don cherished time with family and friends in his beloved hometown of Morris, especially at Corn Festival or in the stands cheering on the Redskins. For over 20 years, he and Joan embraced the winter months in Marco Island, Florida, enjoying the sunshine and coastal living with their close group of Morris “snowbird” friends.
Don was a member of the Morris Rotary Club for 37 years and was proud of his service, including a tenure as the Club President. Don and his family also attended the First Presbyterian Church of Morris. Leveraging his engineering background, he was actively involved in leading the efforts for the 1989 church addition.
An avid golfer, Don was a familiar presence on the greens. He and Joan were long-standing members of the Morris Country Club for over 50 years, where they shared many enjoyable rounds and built enduring friendships. Beyond golf, Don found pleasure in problem-solving and word puzzles, reading, bridge/card playing and, most importantly, spending quality time with his beloved family. In addition, Don was known for his intellect, sharp wit and way with words.
Don's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joan; his loving daughters, Susan (Larry) Chilton of LaGrange, IL and Kathryn (Kieran) Bixby-Browne of Chicago, IL; his cherished grandchildren, Megan (Chris) Farwell, Kathryn (Adrian) Chilton, and Ryan Chilton; and his adored baby great-granddaughter, Diana. He also leaves behind his cousin, Chuck Kibler, and his devoted friend, Jacque Vicini.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Ila (Mosher) Bixby, his sisters Marjorie Gillick and Carm Danner, his brother Roger Bixby, and his step-brother, Dick Bixby.
Services for Donald Bixby will be held privately by his family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation or Morris Rotary Club.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Morris Healthcare Center-Dresden, Morris Hospital, Park Pointe/Serenity Rehabilitation Center, and Lightways Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion during Don's final days. His memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
