Obituary

Age 81, of Braceville, Illinois, formerly a longtime resident of La Marada, California, died on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the Arc of Dwight.

Born on November 23, 1944, in New Brunswick, Canada, Eugene Wilmot was the son of Ansel and Ruth (Stevenson) DeWitt. He was raised on farmland in Andover, New Brunswick, where he grew up alongside his 8 siblings and developed a lifelong appreciation for hard work, learning, and independence. He completed his high school education in Andover and later earned a bachelor’s degree in education. On May 31, 1975, he married Diane Luce and shared many years together before her passing on November 30, 2017.

Eugene began his professional life as a teacher, a role he held for one year. Eugene continued working in various bartending positions in Coal City, Illinois, where his wit and friendly personality were well known. Eugene then dedicated many years to the Soap manufacturing plant. He held the positions of the head of maintenance and a member of the emergency crew. Known for his reliability and problem-solving skills, he took pride in his work and in overseeing projects to completion.

Outside of work, Eugene had a wide range of interests and passions. He was an avid reader and enjoyed learning about Native American culture. He found creative fulfillment in crafting, especially painting. He took particular joy in helping others, whether through hands-on projects or offering guidance and support. Eugene had a fondness for sweets, a deep love for animals, and a strong enthusiasm for travel. Some of his favorite destinations and traveling included the Florida Keys, cruises, and international adventures.

Eugene will be remembered as a jokester with a sharp wit, a strong-willed spirit, and a big heart. His humor and willingness to lend a hand will leave a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Eugene is survived by his children: Kirsten (Bruce) Domenech of Exeter Mills, Maine; Brent (Alba) DeWitt of Braceville, Illinois, and Danielle Black of Sheldon, Missouri, six grandchildren: five great-grandchildren: his siblings: Blaine of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick, Lila of Calgary, Alberta, Linda of Aroostook, New Brunswick, Mac of Tacoma, Washington, Richard of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick, Doug of Sussex, New Brunswick and his numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friends Candy Byers, Tom Crawford, and many others from around town.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Diane; and his siblings, Tom and Marg.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.
