Fred Dickison
Age 91, of Wilmington, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, Illinois.
Born September 22, 1935, in Grahn, Kentucky, Frederick Martin was a son of John Paul and Gertie (Roar) Dickison. He was raised and educated in Kentucky, and on June 19, 1956, Fred married Mabel Elkins. Together, they built a life centered on love, faith, and family, sharing the years ahead as devoted partners while raising their children and creating a lifetime of cherished memories.
Fred dedicated 28½ years of service to Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) in LaGrange, Illinois, where he was a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW) until his retirement. Beyond his working career, Fred’s greatest calling was his unwavering devotion to the Lord. A man of deep and abiding faith, he faithfully served as a preacher at the Manteno Church of Christ for 15 years and was a dedicated member of the Church of Christ in Wilmington. His faith was not simply something he professed, but something he lived each day, sharing God’s word, serving others, and touching countless lives through both his ministry and the example he set in his everyday life.
An outdoorsman at heart, Fred found great enjoyment in fishing and especially appreciated the opportunity to make his home along the Kankakee River. He also enjoyed hunting and was happiest when keeping himself busy. Never one to sit idle for long, Fred had a knack for tinkering with small engines and could often be found working on one project or another.
Yet, more than his hobbies or accomplishments, it was Fred’s character that truly defined him. He was a kindhearted, welcoming, and generous man who never hesitated to lend a helping hand or do whatever he could for someone in need. His genuine nature, easygoing personality, and sincere concern for others made him a man who was not only well-liked, but deeply loved by those fortunate enough to know him.
Above all, Fred treasured his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, a proud father, and a man who understood the importance of time spent together. Annual family vacations became especially meaningful traditions, providing opportunities for laughter, togetherness, and memories that would be cherished for generations.
Fred lived his life guided by faith, strengthened by family, and grounded in a genuine love for others. Though his earthly journey has come to an end, the example of his Christian faith, his generous spirit, and the love he so freely shared will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Mabel; son, John Martin (Roxanne) Dickison of Kentucky; daughter, Tonyia Jo (Jody) Johnson of Florida and his son-in-law, Jim Foster of Tennessee; (15) grandchildren; (32) great-grandchildren; one sister, Sharon Davis of Kansas; sister-in-law, Nancy Dickison of Chatsworth, Illinois and numerous nieces and nephews, wonderful neighbors and friends, as well as his dedicated caregiver, Clement who become like family.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters: Teresa Kaye Boward and Terenia Maye Foster; grandson, B.J. Boward and three brothers, Kermit Dickison, Cecil Ray Dickison and Malcomb Dickison.
