Obituary

Age 80, of Essex Illinois, formerly of Virden, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at his home surrounded by family.

Born on April 17, 1945, in Springfield, Illinois, Fred Wayne was a son to Earl Sweet and Beverly (Dunlap) Paine. He was raised and educated in Virden, where he built the foundation for a strong work ethic that carried throughout his life. On January 25, 1969, he married Bernice “Bee” Bancroft in Auburn, Illinois, and together they began building a loving family. Fred spent many years working as a dedicated truck driver, beginning with Hulcher Emergency, where he served in both Virden and Highland, Illinois and Lexington, Ohio. He later continued his career with ABF before spending many years with Hoffman Transportation in Channahon, Illinois. It was there that he concluded his working years, retiring after a long and hardworking career on the road.

He enjoyed car shows, NASCAR, and NHRA, and had a lifelong passion for cars, owning hundreds over the years. Fred was outgoing and easy to talk to, often striking up conversations wherever he went. He cared deeply for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and truly valued the time he spent with his family.

Fred is survived by his wife, Bee (Bancroft) Sweet; children: Dana Sweet of Pawnee, Illinois, and Keri (Ryan) Lechtenberg of Braidwood, Illinois; grandchildren: Tahler and Chase Lechtenberg, estranged, Tori (Bright) Summer and Nick Summer; great-grandchildren: Landon, Layla, and Rowan Summer; two sisters: Deb Dillon, and Bunny Paine; as well as several cousins, numerous nieces and nephews and his lifelong friend, Tony Swift.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; grandchild, Griffin McGary; stepfather, Finis Paine; niece, Angie (Little) Graham as well as his furry friend, Bentley.

Per his wishes cremation rites are being accorded.

Donations may be made as gifts in Fred's name to Uplifted Care Hospice or Gift of Hope.

A celebration of life is being planned for a later date.
