Gary E. Hauge of Big Rock, passed into eternal life on Oct. 12, 2024 from the effects of Parkinson’s disease.
Gary was born on June 30, 1944 to Marcus (Mike) and Ruby Hauge of Morris, Illinois. He was in the Class of 1962 for Morris High School and graduated from Joliet Junior College and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
During high school Gary worked for Piggly Wiggly (later Eagle Foods) in Morris and during college he worked in DeKalb and then was store produce manager in Rochelle.
After graduating from NIU in 1969 with a business degree, Gary was a commercial insurance underwriter for the Farmers Insurance regional office in North Aurora. After early retirement Gary worked to give things back to the community. He was president of the Big Rock Historical Society for a term and spent countless hours helping to establish Big Rock Library. The commitment that he loved the most was being point person for weddings when the Marvel Davis barns were being developed into event venues.
Gary and Mary Ragnes married in 1965 forming a partnership of soulmates for 59 years. During their college years they raised exotic pheasants which led to friendships with game breeders which led to becoming amateur taxidermists which led to hunting trips to Africa. True to his Norwegian heritage, Gary was quiet and reserved, loyal, and frugal.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Maynard, and infant, Donald. He is survived by his wife, Mary, his sister-in-law, Judy Hauge, and his niece, Melissa McDonough and her family.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, Nov. 2 at the English Congregational United Church of Christ at 301 Rhodes St. in Big Rock. For handicapped accessibility, park and enter the rear of the church. Visitation will be from 10 am to 11:30 am followed by a Celebration of Life service conducted by Pastor John Omerod. All are invited to a catered luncheon following in Fellowship Hall of the church. After the meal, those desiring may drive to Evergreen Cemetery in Morris for the Inurnment Service led by Pastor Gerry Steele.
Memorials may be directed to the church (ECUCC) or Big Rock Library or Vitas Hospice.
