Gladys M. Meyer

Age 82 of Rockville Township, Manteno, died Sunday, May 25, 2025 at Citadel Care Center in Kankakee, Illinois.

Born June 21, 1942 in Joliet, Illinois, Gladys Margaret was a daughter of Laverne and Alice (Green) Lovell. She was raised in Rockville Township and graduated from Saint Patrick's Catholic High School in Kankakee, Illinois. Gladys furthered her education and graduated from St. Francis College in Joliet. On June 16, 1963, Gladys married the love of her life, John Meyer, Jr., at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Wilton Center. Together they made their home in Wilton Township where they raised their family before later moving to Rockville Township.

Gladys worked for the Manteno School District as a primary school teacher until she decided to remain at home and raise both her sons. She worked for a time in the office at FS Grain in Symerton, and was an active member of Saint Patrick Church where she belonged to the Council of Catholic Women, was previously Director of Religious Education, Directed the choir, and served on Parish Council.

Gladys was a true matriarch, dedicated to being a supportive wife and mother to her family. She kept the house in order and helped out on the farm however she could. Gladys was an avid gardener, enjoying flower gardening and especially vegetable gardening. She was often canning much of what her garden produced to save for whenever she would need it. Gladys took great pleasure reading and enjoyed watching old Westerns. She would also crochet often and use her creations to decorate her home or share with others as gifts.

Above all else, Gladys was happiest when she was with the people she loved. She spent her entire adult life with her loving husband, John, with whom she was inseparable. Gladys' devotion to her family, strong work ethic, and deep faith will be her legacy, cherished forever by those she loved and who loved her.

Survivors include her husband of over 62 years, John Meyer, Jr.; two sons: Donald (Mary) Meyer of Urbana, Illinois and David (Donnette) Meyer of Kankakee, Illinois; one granddaughter, Allyson Meyer of Kankakee, Illinois, and several cousins, as well as their families.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and her aunt, Loretta (Francis "Jiggs") Long.
