Grace Anne Kumor, MD, aged 30, passed away after complications following a short illness. She is survived by her parents, Stan and Marcie Kumor, brother Philip (Lucia) Kumor, nephew Mateo Kumor, grandmother Renee Kumor, and grandparents Roger and Lib Thorson. Her aunts and uncles include: Jenny Kumor, Julie Kumor, Paul Kumor, Rod (Susan) Thorson, Maureen (John) Keegan, Greg Thorson, Andy (Kristen) Thorson, and Monica (Aaron) Dunn. She is also survived by 15 first cousins. Preceding her in death was her grandfather Stanley Kumor.

When asked to describe Grace, her family and friends repeatedly use the words unapologetically herself. Grace was confident in who she was and never strayed off the path in living her beautiful life story. She thrived in her schooling at Immaculate Conception School, Morris Community High School, Saint Mary’s College-Notre Dame IN, and Southern Illinois University Medical School. Her hard work, commitment, and steadiness helped her to become a caring, gentle, dedicated, and approachable doctor. She was most recently the recipient of the Clinical Care Excellence Award while working as a clinical psychiatrist and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, Illinois.

Apart from her work, many will remember Grace as an extremely talented musician. Music came easily to Grace and her singing voice was natural, beautiful, and free. When singing and playing instruments, her personality shone through. She was charismatic and joyful, and absolutely loved singing with her friends during her time at Saint Mary’s College. She also brought comfort and joy to many, singing at memorials, church services, and weddings throughout the community.

Perhaps most importantly, Grace was fun! Her sense of playfulness and imagination meant she was always ready to jump into a game, run around with friends and cousins, and never afraid to get messy in a mud puddle or sit in the grass at the farm or a hiking trail. Friends and family loved playing with Grace because she was inclusive, light-hearted, and accepting of all. She was extremely brave in all aspects of her life, whether it was meeting new people, volunteering in Ghana and Sri Lanka, or simply picking up a snake off the road. There was no stopping Grace! Everyone will remember how she lit up a room with her laughter, gentle smile, and smart sense of humor. Grace also cared for everyone more than herself. Empathetic, helpful, and generous was her spirit and she made a positive impact on everyone around her. Grace will be missed more than she can know but her spirit will live on in everyone she inspired. Hopefully, if we all live more like our Gracie, we can make our world a more beautiful, joyful, and loving place.
