Age 75 of Wilmington, Illinois, formerly of Joliet, Illinois and Louisville, Kentucky, died Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at his home.

Born March 21, 1951, in Louisville, Kentucky, Joel Ray was the son of Gordon and Olive (Terrel) Martin. He was raised and educated in Louisville, where he made many fond childhood memories with his brothers and friends. Joel later settled in Joliet, Illinois, where he worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company for more than 30 years in heating and air conditioning before retiring on April 1, 1999. Joel was also a longtime member of the Wilmington Moose Lodge and the NRA.

On October 16, 1993, Joel married Lois Leroy in Joliet, Illinois. After their marriage, Joel and Lois eventually made Wilmington their home, where they enjoyed many years together and created new memories with family and friends.

Joel was a man who found enjoyment in the everyday moments of life. He loved tending to his garden, spending time outdoors, and grilling. Above all, he treasured his family and especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren. He shared a particularly special bond with his granddaughters, Gabrielle and Taylor, who held a very special place in his heart.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; his children, Jeffrey (Ann) Martin of Houston, Texas, and Donna Renee Martin; step-children, Vicki Napoleon of Wheeling, Illinois, Donald (Carrie) Wheeler of Dallas, Texas, and Sheryl Mathus of Wilmington; grandchildren, June Martin, Gabrielle Mathus, Taylor Mathus, Jackie (Fil) Tejeda, Ryan (Melissa) Wheeler, and Kyle Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Sofia, Ezra, Evelyn, Colton, and Noah; one sister, Shirley Isaacs of Kentucky; and his special niece, Kimberly (Ronald) DiCamillo of Florida.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Joel Martin; and two brothers, Terry Martin and Sherrill “Bud” Martin.

The family will receive friends for visitation at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road, Wilmington, on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 12:00 p.m.

Burial will follow in Wesley Cemetery in Ritchie, Illinois.
