Age 46 of Eagle River, Wisconsin and formerly of Dunlap, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at his home surrounded by family.
Born February 25, 1977 in Morris, Illinois, John is the son of Janis Wethington (nee Silk) and William Wethington. He was raised in Morris; graduated from Morris Community High School with the Class of 1995 and went on to earn his degree in computer information from Midstate College in 1999. On May 7, 2005, John married Kristi Caldwell in Peoria, Illinois and together they made a home and started a family together in the Peoria area before recently moving to Eagle River.
John’s career was that of an I.T. Specialist, and his career included positions with Heyl, Royster, Voelker, & Allen Law Firm in Peoria, Dunlap United School District, Momentum Technologies, and most recently Sokaogon Chippewa Health Clinic. In addition he was an avid photographer who owned and operated a part-time photography service, J. Utah Photography. John took numerous portraits of families and friends over the years, as well as captured countless sports action shots. He was a rabid St. Louis Cardinals fan; enjoyed fishing, and loved coaching, especially alongside his boys. John took pleasure in playing games with family and friends, especially pick-up basketball games.
John was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and uncle who will be long remembered and so very missed.
Survivors include his wife, Kristi; two sons: Alex and Adam Wethington; his parents: Janis Wethington of Morris and William (Donna) Wethington of Coal City; one sister, Jennifer (Steven) Stapay of Gilberts, Illinois; niece, Emily Stapay and nephew, Andrew Stapay; aunts and uncles: Susan (Robert) Cardinell of DeKalb, Illinois, Donald (Coral) Silk of Des Moines, Iowa, Thomas Silk of Morris and Larry (Sue) Wethington of Tinley Park, Illinois, and several cousins.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents: Donald and Jane (Tabler) Silk and Robert and Thelma (Gill) Wethington; his cousins, Amanda Wethington and numerous aunts and uncles.
The family will receive friends for a visitation at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 East Washington Street (one block east of Illinois Route 47) in Morris on Sunday, April 23, 2023 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Those able to attend are encouraged to wear their favorite sports attire, as John loved sports, especially baseball.
Funeral services will follow on Monday morning, April 24, 2023 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 600 East Jackson Street in Morris. The family will again receive friends in the narthex of the church beginning at 9:00 a.m., until time of service at 10:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian of Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Jason Stone presiding, and Deacon Paul Jung assisting.
Burial will be in Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Morris, where John will be laid to rest with his grandparents. Pallbearers will be: Steve Stapay, Andrew Stapay, Ben Grabowski, Shawn Bols, Bob Stansberry and Matt Jensen.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in John’s memory to Cardinals Care via St. Louis Cardinals; Ronald McDonald House or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
