With deep sorrow we announce Karen A. Saunders (nee Rasmusson) Age 83 passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 20th, 2026 in Wilmington, IL. We remember her life as being filled with immense love, compassion, and a self-less caring nature.
Born in Norway, MI to the late William and Elizabeth (nee Hull) Rasmusson on February 27th, 1942. She was raised by various family members starting at age 4. This experience fueled her intense desire to help others. She spent her adult life as a caring and supportive motherly figure to both her family and anyone else in need.
After moving to Chicago, IL at age 12, Karen had 5 children. She was a hard worker and an avid learner. Despite being a single mother in the late 60’s and the 70’s, she made time to teach herself various job-related skills to help support her family and to better herself. Her proudest career accomplishments include her self-written computer programs. She is responsible for writing the first software programs for tracking freight trains across the country and for keeping track of foster children in Cook County.
She was preceded in death by her brother Jon Rasmusson, daughter Kristine (Scott) Presbitero and son-in-law Tim Jeschke. She is survived by her children Derrick (Toni) Saunders, Karen Jeschke, Laura Saunders, and Lisa Finlay (Robert Brown); grand children Justin Girkant, Danielle Girkant, Candis Saunders, Dana Ford, Kevin (Alicia) Ford, Jodi (Jeff) Osborn and Samantha Finlay; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Karen enjoyed spending time with her family. She valued being the person anyone could call if they needed help. She was extremely intelligent, independent, encouraging, and loved sharing her knowledge with others to help them also progress in life. Her retirement years were spent in her happy place in Wilmington. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, socializing with friends and family, and especially loved spoiling her family on Christmas.
The memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 15th from 3-7pm at Twin Towers Chapel, 9967 W. 144th St. in Orland Park, IL.
