Lucille Quayle

Age 95 of Coal City, passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on Friday, October 8, 2021 at the Lightways Hospice Home in Joliet, Illinois.

Born March 9, 1926 in Joliet, Illinois, Lucille was the 7th of 14 born to Charles Joseph and Gertrude Evelyn (Howard) Haldorson. She was raised in Symerton before the family moved to a farm on Whitetie Road north of Carbon Hill. Lucille attended Carbon Hill School and went on to graduate from Coal City High School with the Class of 1944. On June 25, 1949, Lucille married Royce Quayle in Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, and together they made their home and raised their family in Custer Park.

Lucille was a stay at home mom, until gaining employment with the Custer Park Grade School in 1969.  She began as a Kindergarten Teacher, and retired as school secretary following 25 years of faithful service. Throughout the years, Lucille was active serving on numerous committees throughout the community. She served on the feasibility committee that chose the fate of the Custer Park Grade School to become a part of the Reed Custer School District; she and Royce helped in the initial forming of the Custer Park Fire District and Auxiliary; she was active in the PTO/PTA, and she was proud to have piloted the hot lunch program which began with her and other mothers serving barbeque to the students one day a week. In addition, Lucille was an active member of the Wilmington VFW Auxiliary, and belonged to Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City.

In 1985, Lucille and Royce relocated to Carbon Hill, and it was following the death of Royce in 2002 that she made her home in Coal City. Lucille enjoyed playing cards, watching T.V. and cooking. The Holidays were always a time of coming together, and family was of the greatest and utmost importance to Lucille. She truly cherished her entire family and will be long remembered by the community and beyond as “Grandma Lou”. To know Lucille was to love her…
