Age 73, of Morris, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, following a recent diagnosis of a rare disease, Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Born on May 17, 1952, in Morris, Mary Kathryn was the daughter of William and Kathryn (Lacyk) Shpuk. She was raised and educated in Morris and graduated from Morris High School with the Class of 1970.

Mary worked as a clerk for many years, including 15 years at Hornsby’s and 7 years at Baum’s. On November 25, 1977, she married the love of her life, Leonard Smith, in Morris, and together they built a life and raised their family.

Mary had a deep love for gardening and enjoyed watching birds, especially hummingbirds. She adored her flowers and took great pride in her magnolia trees, as well as her daffodils, tulips, and hostas. She was known for her cheerful spirit and warm smile. Mary was also an avid collector and had a fond appreciation for antiques.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard, and son Nicholas (Beth) Smith; brother, Greg (Marcia) Shpuk and brothers and sisters in law: Cheryl Smith, Kathy Smith, and Clara McCarthy as well numerous nieces and nephews, several cousins, and longtime friends Jean and Barb.

Mary was proceeded in death by her parents, and brother-in-law, LaVerne Smith.

Memorials may be made as gifts in Mary's name to the "Rhythm of Youth" through the Morris Hospital.

The family would like to thank the nurses of Loyola University Medical Center and OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center of Peru for their tireless and compassionate care of Mary, and also deep appreciation for the assistance and advice of Mary's niece, Brenda (Tim) Walsh. 

The family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday, April 20, 2026, at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 West Jefferson Street, in Morris from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at 6:00 p.m. Following the services she will privately be laid to rest at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Morris with her parents.
