Purlean Waddell

Age 85 of Wilmington, Illinois, died unexpectantly Monday, June 8, 2026 in her home.

Born February 28, 1941, in Brownsville, Tennessee, Purlean Waddell was a daughter of Mary Lou Whittiemore-Hicks. She spent most of her childhood and school years in Haywood County, Tennessee.

Later in life, Purlean met the love of her life, Lathan Holland, and together they made their home in Wilmington, Illinois. Their life together was built on love, devotion, and shared passions. She found great fulfillment in the care and ownership of harness horses, a passion that was pursued for more than 20 years through her involvement with the Illinois Harness Horsemen's Association.

Purlean enjoyed cooking and spending time outdoors, often combining the two by making her famous grilled cornbread for her family. Affectionately known as the family's "crazy bird lady," she cherished her many birds, especially her beloved parrot, Petey. She also loved spending time fishing on the boat and found happiness in simple moments on the porch with Lathan, listening to her favorite old-school country and Motown music.

She will be remembered for her independent spirit, her gift for storytelling, and her ability to live life on her own terms. Though naturally quiet and reserved, Purlean had a way of making her presence known when it mattered most. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Purlean is survived by her loving husband Lathan Holland of Wilmington; one son, Roger Waddell (Dianna) of Henry, Illinois; two grandchildren: Crystal (Drew) Thomas of Mississippi and Monique Waddell of Chicago, Illinois; two great grandsons Tripp and Cort Thomas and one great granddaughter Cadence Kent, along with numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her special family members: Barbara Jones and Wendy Hill, both of Wilmington.

Purlean was preceded in death by her parents and her son Keith Waddell.

Per her wishes, cremation rites are being accorded.
