Raymond L. Monson

Age 94 of Wilmington, Illinois passed away Sunday, November 19, 2023 at his home.

Born January 05, 1929 in Gardner, Illinois, Raymond Lee was a son of John and Mabel (Tuntland) Monson. He was raised and educated in Wilmington and graduated from Wilmington High School Class of 1946. Following high school Ray went on to honorably serve in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On September 30, 1950, Ray married Helen B. Adkins in Joliet, and together the two made a home and raised a family. In that same year, he gained employment with Public Service, where he continued to work for the following 38 years until retiring from Commonwealth Edison in 1988. Ray was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington and the Wilmington Lodge #208 A.F. & A.M. In his free time, Ray enjoyed woodworking, he made many memories traveling throughout the entire United States, and will most be remembered for his love of spending time with family.

Survivors include his children: Janice Monson of Wisconsin, David (Pam) Monson and Bruce Monson, both of Wilmington, Ron (Carol) Monson of Braidwood; his daughter-in-law, Linda Monson of Arizona; eight grandchildren: Caroline (Scott) Norrington of Diamond, Illinois, David Monson Jr. and Sharon Monson, both of Wilmington, Craig (Katie) Monson of Arizona, Donald Monson of Braidwood, Illinois, Lisa (Nathan) Smith of Pontiac, Illinois, Matt Gruetzmacher of Braidwood and Gary Johnson of Piper City, Illinois; nine great grandchildren; sister, Shirley (Joe) Marable of Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Yvonne Monson of Niles, Illinois, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his canine companion, Muffin.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis; wife, Helen; brother-in-law, Russell (Lois) Adkins; sister-in-law, Josephine (Levi) Lewis; one granddaughter, Heidi Gruetzmacher; two brothers: Robert and Milton and two sisters: Virginia (Dale) Sanders and Marjorie (Robert) Nutt.
 
The family will receive friends for a visitation at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation and a memorial service will follow Tuesday morning, November 28, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Reverend Harriette Cross from the First United Methodist Church in Wilmington will officiate.

Inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Wilmington, where Ray will be laid to rest with his late wife, Helen.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Ray’s memory to the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington, 401 East Kahler Road, Wilmington, IL 60481.
