Age 87 of Coal City, Illinois, died unexpectedly on Monday, December 15, 2025 at his home.

Born January 29, 1938 in Morris, Illinois, Richard Joseph was a son of Richard Thomas and Angelena (Boggio) Scerine. He was raised and educated in Coal City and graduated from Coal City High School with the Class of 1956. Following high school, Richard served in the United States Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1958. He worked as an independent truck driver and was a member of the Teamsters, and later spent over 20 years working for ECOLAB. Richard was an avid golfer, playing every local course nearby and enjoyed traveling to play in his younger years. He was a familiar face in town and was a regular at the Whistle Stop Cafe where he made many friends and acquaintances throughout the years. Richard was a proud father and grandfather whose family meant everything to him and he was grateful for the love and memories he shared with them.

Survivors include his children: LeAnn Grengs of Coal City, Irene Scerine of Oswego, Illinois, and Rich (Kim) Scerine of Coal City; five grandchildren: Cody Scerine, Dillon Grengs, Zack (Brittany) Scerine, Tanner Grengs, and Jake Scerine; two great grandchildren: Sage and Scout Scerine; two brothers and one sister: William (Lynda) Scerine, Terry Scerine, and Sharon Nicoletti; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Per Richard's wishes, cremation rites are being accorded.

The family will receive friends for a memorial visitation at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway Street, in Coal City on Saturday, December 20, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until the memorial service at 12:00 p.m.
