Obituary

Robert "Rob" Maurice Oesterle

Age 57, of Morris, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born on July 8, 1969, in Morris, Rob was the son of Laurie and Carol (Coles) Oesterle. He was raised and educated in Morris, graduating from Morris High School with the Class of 1987. Following graduation, he attended Purdue University before pursuing a career in journalism. In 2003, Rob joined the Morris Daily Herald as a sportswriter, later continuing his work with the Joliet Herald-News and, most recently, Shaw Media. Over the course of more than 24 years, Rob dedicated himself to his work and his lifelong passion for sports, sharing that love with the communities he served.

Rob was a true baseball fanatic. He played the game for many years until an arm injury forced him to step away from playing on the field. Rather than leave the game behind, he found a new way to stay connected by writing about the sport he loved. Whether watching a game, listening to the action unfold, or experiencing the excitement of live sporting events, Rob was happiest when he was surrounded by sports.

Beyond the ballpark, Rob had a deep love of music, especially Bruce Springsteen, U2, R.E.M., The Call, and Fleetwood Mac. He also enjoyed playing Guitar Hero and, most of all, attending concerts with his daughter, Brooke. The two shared a special full-circle moment when Rob took Brooke to see her favorite band, and years later, she returned the favor by taking him to see his favorite, Bruce Springsteen. Rob was a devoted father who took great pride in supporting his daughter and family. He also cherished his role as a grandfather and absolutely adored his granddaughter, Ember. Sharing the same birthday made their bond even more special, and the two lovingly referred to each other as “birthday buddies,” a sweet reminder of the unique connection they shared.

He cherished the friendships he built throughout his life, especially with his coworkers and friends. He enjoyed spending time with them, sharing laughs, and occasionally posting a silly selfie to capture the moment. His warmth, humor, passion for life, and genuine love for those around him made him a treasured presence in the lives of so many.

Rob’s impact extended far beyond his work and his love of sports. He was a beloved member of the Morris community whose passion, friendship, and dedication touched countless lives. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, coworkers, and the community he called home.

He is survived by his daughter, Brooke Oesterle, of Morris; granddaughter, Ember Paraf; mother, Carol Coles-Oesterle; siblings: Michael Oesterle, Wendy (John) Pepper, and Cathy Gordon; nieces and nephews: Caitlin Gordon, Jacob Oesterle, Brianna (Pip) Schott-Southwick, Colin Oesterle, and Katie Deck; great niece and nephews: Viviana English and Orion English as well as several cousins and special friends: Brian Dorich, Steve Soucie and co-workers Gary and Randy.

Rob was preceded in death by his father, Laurie; sister, Suzie Oesterle; brother-in-law, Randy Gordon; grandparents, Maurice and Bernice Coles; his uncle, Rob Oesterle, as well as a niece, Samantha English.

In the wake of Rob’s unexpected passing, his family is facing not only the heartbreak of this sudden loss but also the financial challenges that accompany such an unexpected tragedy.
