Obituary

Gone too soon - Roy William Moninger, III, "Doby", passed away peacefully on his 57th birthday, Saturday November 8, 2025, at his home in Wilmington, Illinois.

Born on the snowy evening of November 8, 1968 in Des Moines, Iowa, Doby is the youngest son of Ruth (Semrau) Chew and the late Roy William Moninger, Jr. In 1973, his mom and dad (Carrol D. Chew) relocated to Wilmington where Doby attended local schools. He participated in the Wilco Area Career Center welding program before graduating from Wilmington High School with the Class of 1986. Through the years, Doby worked for multiple businesses including Marchio Flooring in Joliet, several Wilmington construction companies, Mobil Joliet Refinery, Starcon International and finally Bunge Loders Croklaan.

In October of 2016, after a long courtship of thirteen years, Doby married his love Alicia "Eshe" (nee Szcelina), and together they shared their lives until her passing on June 25, 2019.

Doby was a man of quiet faith, with strong values and an unwavering love for his family. He was devoted to his mother and over the years the two shared many cherished times together. He had a deep love of history, politics, current world events, and an impressive knowledge of music. Doby enjoyed reading and had a particular fondness for candy and a good cup of coffee. He loved playing euchre, found peace in the outdoors and could often be found in the quiet solitude of Forsythe Woods Forest Preserve. Doby also treasured the countless, unforgettable memories of traveling with his nephew, Colt.

Doby had endless amounts of generosity and a willingness to help wherever he could. He had a kind heart with an easygoing spirit, to go along with his quick wittedness or a teasing remark or good laugh. He was happiest being himself, which was simple, genuine, and good-natured. A beloved part of his family, Doby's spirit will continue to live on in the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his mother, Ruth Chew; three sisters: Deb (Scott) Stickel of Wilmington, Amy Reeder (Ken Kuczero) of New Lenox, Illinois, and Carolann (Yariv) Cohen of Northbrook, Illinois; his sister-in-law, Johnette Moninger of Dakota City, Nebraska; as well as several aunts and uncles, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Doby was preceded in death by his father, Roy W. Moninger Jr.; his dad, Carrol D. Chew; brother, Doug Moninger; his wife, Alicia Moninger; nephew, Joseph Des Rochers; grandparents: Roy and Lela Moninger, Art and Amanda Semrau, and Mettie Chew; and several aunts and uncles.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and the family is planning a memorial celebration of life at a future date.
