Obituary

Shirley Mae Burns (Pomatto)

Age 80, of Coal City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at Lightways Hospice in Joliet, Illinois.

Shirley was born on August 6, 1945, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Joliet, Illinois, the beloved daughter of Lawrence and Eva Pomatto. She lived most of her life in the Coal City area, where she raised her family and created countless cherished memories. Shirley was known for her zest for life and her willingness to help anyone she met. Her warm, generous spirit and infectious energy brightened every room she entered. A dedicated nurse for 35 years, as well as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Shirley found great joy in canning, cooking, and traveling. Whether she was caring for her patients, preserving the season's harvest, preparing a delicious meal for her family, or exploring new places on the road, she approached life with enthusiasm and shared her love freely with those around her.

Survivors include her husband, Terry Burns of Coal City; her children, Lori Burns (Berkey) of Jacksonville, Florida, Lisa Burns of Coal City, and Steven Burns of Coal City; her brother, Thomas Pomatto of Kenosha, Wisconsin; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Eva Pomatto.

A private family visitation and funeral service will be held at Reeves Funeral Home in Coal City with Reverend Josh Miller presiding. Burial will follow in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, where Shirley will be laid to rest with her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Nurses Foundation in her honor. Shirley's vibrant spirit, big heart, and love of life will live on in her family and everyone whose path she crossed.

Shirley will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
