Obituary

Shirley Gibbs

Age 71 of Wilmington, Illinois and formerly of Monee, Illinois, died unexpectedly on Saturday morning, October 17, 2026 at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, Illinois.

Born February 1, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Shirley Violet was a daughter of Fidel and Violet Catherine (Cotton) Garcia. She was raised in Chicago and went on to graduate from Tinley Park High School with the Class of 1973.

Throughout her working years, Shirley was employed in the grocery industry, holding positions as both a cashier and produce manager with Eagle Grocer, Dominick’s, and Butera Foods in Frankfort. Her years in the grocery business provided her with countless opportunities to connect with others, and she took pride in her work.

Outside of her career, Shirley embraced life’s simple pleasures. She enjoyed golfing, tending to her garden, and spending time on the bowling lanes as a member of a league. An enthusiastic bargain hunter, Shirley had a particular fondness for garage sales and delighted in the thrill of discovering a great deal. Blessed with a playful sense of humor, she was a natural jokester who enjoyed sharing a laugh and bringing smiles to those around her.

In 2016, Shirley made Wilmington her home and became a member of the Wilmington Church of the Nazarene, where she attended services and found a place within her faith community.

Shirley will be remembered for her lighthearted spirit, her love of laughter, and the simple joys that made life meaningful. Her sense of humor and the memories she created along the way will remain a lasting part of the lives of those who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her lifelong dear friends, Debbie and Bob Wegforth of Wilmington; caregiver and friend, Barb; step-mother, Trinny and two brothers, Leo and Paul.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Fidel and Violet; son Christopher Garcia in 2002; brother, Phil, and her longtime loving companion, Sam Cucci.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

A memorial is being planned for a later date at Wilmington Church of the Nazarene.
