Thomas Joseph Alvarez, age 24, of Odell, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2026.

Thomas was born on January 15 in Joliet, Illinois, to DeAnna Bedoya and Joseph Alvarez.

Thomas was incredibly intelligent and beyond passionate about science. He dreamed of becoming an astrophysicist and sharing his knowledge with college students as a professor. At the time of his passing, Thomas was attending Joliet Junior College and Heartland Community College, pursuing his education with the goal of one day studying astrophysics. He was actively working toward the future he had envisioned for himself.

He loved studying the night sky, pointing out different visible planets and stars by name. He was particularly fascinated by black holes and deeply invested in learning about them, always eager to explore the mysteries of the universe and expand his understanding of the world around him. His curiosity was endless, and his passion for science was a defining part of who he was. Thomas had a remarkable ability to become completely absorbed in the subjects that fascinated him, and he loved sharing what he learned with others.

Thomas was also known for his determination, loving heart, strong will, and wonderful sense of humor. He had a way of making the people around him laugh, even in the most ordinary moments. When Thomas set his mind to something, he gave it everything he had. He cared deeply for the people he loved, and those who knew him will remember his intelligence, humor, passion, and the unique way he saw the world.

Thomas and Emma’s story began when they were teenagers, meeting at McDonald’s when Thomas was 16 and Emma was 17. They would open the restaurant together in the early mornings, spending those quiet hours joking, talking, and getting to know one another. Although life eventually took them in different directions, the connection they had made never truly disappeared.

Thomas later moved to Missouri, and in August of 2020, he reached out to Emma and they reconnected. On October 12, 2020, they met up again, beginning a new chapter in their story. From that day forward, they were together.

For the next two years, Thomas and Emma maintained a long-distance relationship, making the distance work because they knew they wanted a life together. Eventually, they moved in together in Odell, Illinois, where they began building that life side by side.

Together, Thomas and Emma created a home filled with laughter, imagination, games, and love. They shared their favorite hobbies, introduced each other to new interests, and created traditions that belonged only to them. Their love of Dungeons & Dragons became one of those traditions, with the two taking turns creating holiday-themed adventures for each other. What started as two teenagers joking together during early-morning shifts at McDonald’s had grown into a marriage, a home, and a family of their own.

The greatest chapter of their life together came with the birth of their son, Elias Apollo. Thomas and Emma shared the joy of watching their son discover the world, and Thomas embraced fatherhood with the same curiosity, enthusiasm, and love that he brought to everything that mattered to him.

Thomas grew up playing video games with his big brother, Joe, and after meeting Emma, he happily roped her into playing many of his favorite games as well. He especially enjoyed World of Warcraft and fighting games such as 2XKO, Marvel Tokon, and Street Fighter. He also loved Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.

Dungeons & Dragons became a particularly special part of Thomas and Emma’s relationship. For every holiday, they would take turns creating little D&D one-shots for each other, designing adventures around the theme of the holiday. These were more than games—they were little adventures they created together, filled with creativity, imagination, laughter, and love.

Above all, Thomas cherished being a father to his son, Elias. He loved playing with toys with Elias and would go out of his way to find and buy any superhero toy he could for him. He loved taking Elias to the beach and watching him explore the world at his own pace. Thomas encouraged his son’s curiosity and discovery, giving him the freedom to experience the world while being there beside him.

The love Thomas had for Elias was profound. He treasured the opportunity to watch his son grow, explore, and discover the world, and the memories they made together will be cherished always.

Thomas is survived by his beloved wife, Emma Hall, age 25; his beloved son, Elias Apollo Alvarez, age 16 months; his mother, DeAnna Bedoya Triana, and her husband, Brian Triana; his father, Joseph Alvarez; his stepmother, Oriana Lanette; his brothers, Joey Alvarez, age 26, Christian Vivona, age 17, Dante Vivona, age 15, and Devin Alvarez, age 16; his sister, Juliette Bourricaudy, age 10; his paternal grandparents, James L. Lynn and Kathleen Marie Lynn (Zeiger), as well as many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members.

Thomas was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Belinda Hampton; his maternal grandfather, Pepe Bedoya; his aunt, Diana Carreno; and his paternal grandfather, Joaquin Alvarez.

A celebration of life will be held on a future date to be decided.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family for Elias’s care, if desired.

Thomas’s life was far too short, but the love he gave, the laughter he shared, the knowledge he pursued, and the family he cherished will remain with those who knew him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his wife, his son, his family, and all who loved him.
