Thomas J. Furtney

Age 72 of Dwight, Illinois, died Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Morris Hospital.

Born January 17, 1951 in Fairmont, Minnesota, Thomas is a son of Catherine Pahlow and the late John R. Furtney. He was raised in St. Peter, Minnesota, and then moved to Villa Park, Illinois where he graduated from high school. On June 10, 1976, Tom married Joyce D. Fritz in Darien, Illinois, and together they made their home in the Southwest Suburbs.

He was a carpenter by trade, and worked for Defender Steel Door Company from 1976 until he retired in 1992. Tom was a past member of Darien Grove Baptist Church and found great comfort in reading scripture. He took great pleasure in listening to music and was a lover of all animals. Tom’s greatest joy was found in spending time with his family and with the love of his life, Joyce.

Survivors include his mother, Catherine Pahlow, and step-mother, Irma Furtney; two children: Donna (Tom) Scagliarini and Wendy Bertels; two grandchildren: David and Matthew Scagliarini; five great grandchildren: Gia, Bryce, Brooks, Connor, and Riley; four brothers and one sister: Robert (Diane) Furtney of Scottsdale, Arizona, James (Justin) Furtney of Humble, Texas, Richard (Julia) Lommatzsch of Plainfield, Illinois, Roger (Julie) Lommatzsch of Oswego, Illinois, and Michelle (Brian) Goodman of Los Angeles, California; as well as several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews, including his niece and caregiver, Susie Fowler.

Tom was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joyce Furtney;  his father, John Furtney, and his step-father, Rich Lommatzsch; two sisters: Theresa Hibbs and Deborah Yokell; one niece, Kelly Pynakker, and one nephew, Jeff Furtney.

Cremation rites are being accorded and private inurnment will follow on November 4, 2023 at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.
