Age 77 and a lifelong resident of Coal City, Illinois, died Friday, September 27, 2024 at Lightways Hospice in Joliet, Illinois.
Born June 1, 1947 in Joliet, Illinois, Timothy John was a son of Joseph H. and Ruth N. (Wilson) Hanley. He was raised in Coal City, where he received his education and graduated from Coal City High School with the Class of 1965. On June 7, 1969, Tim united in marriage with Jodi Gervase in New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City, and together they built a loving home and raised a wonderful family.
As a skilled carpenter, Tim began his career with the Carpenters Local 1092 out of Seneca and later worked with Local 195 in Ottawa, ultimately retiring from Local 174 out of Joliet. Tim was deeply committed to his community, volunteering with the Coal City Fire and Rescue Squad, serving on the board and as a past president of the Coal City Area Club, and co-founding the Coal City High School Fishing Team.
Tim had a passion for fishing and woodworking, and he relished opportunities to share his skills, especially with his grandchildren. Many hours were spent in his workshop crafting baseball bats, bowls, flags, and holiday crafts. Traveling and creating memories with his family brought him great joy, particularly his visits to National Parks and historical sites, and he cherished time spent in Pennsylvania with his daughter, Joanna, and her family. Tim found satisfaction in home repairs and construction, having built numerous commercial buildings, garages, sheds, and decks. He took particular pride in constructing a home for his son, Paul, and his family. As a devoted supporter, he was the biggest cheerleader for his grandchildren, attending their sporting events, concerts, and competitions. Tim was also an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Bears, White Sox, Blackhawks, and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Tim's spirit and dedication to family, friends, and community will always be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, and love that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
