Age 73 of Wilmington, formerly of Chicago, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020 at her home.
Born June 1, 1947 in Winfield, Tennessee, Conda Sue was a daughter of Hurstle and Della (Burchfield) Stephens. She was raised and educated in Tennessee, and then moved to Kentucky and later to Chicago. On April 20, 1974, she married Philip Joseph Bragiel in Chicago, and together they raised their family in the Marquette Park neighborhood of Chicago.
Connie worked for many years as a dental assistant until she retired, and she and her husband relocated to Wilmington. She was an active member of Saint Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington where she was a member of the CCW, and also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Connie was an avid gardener whose backyard was her paradise. She loved to tend to her flowers and watch hummingbirds visit the bird feeders she would put out for them. Connie had a keen interest in politics and enjoyed reading any book she could get her hands on. She always looked forward to family game night with her children or grandchildren, and took great pride in her family and raising them.
Survivors include her three children: Dwayne (Kathy) Bragiel and Glenn (Laura) Bragiel, both of Chicago, and Philip (Amy) Bragiel of Plainfield; eight grandchildren: Nicole Bragiel, June (Griffin) Augustyniak, Loren (Joseph) DeAngeles, Joseph Bragiel, Matt Bragiel, Sara Bragiel, Gianna Bragiel, and Madison Bragiel; five great grandchildren: Madelyn, Hayden, Malachi, Elena, and Joseph, Jr.; eight brothers and sisters: Hurshel (Debra) Stephens and Kathel Moore, both of Tennessee, Von (Linda) Burchfield and Carl (Mary) Burchfield, both of Indiana, Klethern (Charles) Carlisle, Corlan Ellis, and Bandal Ball, all of Kentucky, and Gigi (Gary) Ellis of Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Eileen (the late Rick) Johnson of Chicago, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twelve brothers and sisters, and special aunt: Margaret Burchfield.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday, October 26, 2020 at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road, in Wilmington from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Due to recent updated mandates issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health; Face mask requirements and measures of safe social distancing practices will be in order. The funeral home staff will assist the family not to exceed the safe number set forth for the visitation and funeral.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Wilmington, with Reverend Sebastian Gargol presiding. Those wishing to participate in Connie’s services are invited to watch the live stream on Tuesday morning starting at 11:00 a.m. by logging onto her memorial page.
Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Wilmington, where Connie will be laid to rest with her husband, Philip.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Connie’s memory to the Saint Rose Catholic Church CCW.
