Eugene Altiery, Sr.
Age 77 of Braidwood, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2020 at Morris Hospital.
Born August 20, 1943 in Joliet, Eugene Bernard was a son of Daniel and Frances (nee Lesh) Altiery. He was raised and educated in Joliet, and graduated from Joliet Township High School. On December 29, 1962, Geno married Sandra Sue Amiot at the Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1962 until his release from service in 1964.
Geno worked his entire life as a self-employed, independent contractor who refinished wooden floors and surfaces. He held memberships with Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Braidwood and Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Wilmington throughout his life. Geno’s true life passion was fishing. He was a guide for over thirty years and wrote for both the Outdoor Times and the Outdoor Notebook. Geno was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Chicago Bears.
Survivors include five children: Geno, Jr. (Elizabeth) Altiery of San Diego, California, Tony Altiery and Lisa Altiery, both of Braidwood, Dawn (Dennis) Keene of Manteno, and Vicky (Bob) Williams of Braidwood; eight grandchildren: Christopher (Lauren) Altiery, Nickolas Altiery (Mireya Castaneda), Madison Altiery, Kara Keene, Isabel Keene, Jordan Williams (Donnie Murphy), Reilley (Zachary) Majchrzak, and Justin Williams; two great grandsons: D.J. Murphy and Julian Altiery; one brother, Daniel (Debbie) Altiery of Braidwood, one sister, Ellen (Gene) Thompson of Woodbine, Georgia, one sister-in-law, Collette Weikum of Naperville, one brother-in-law, William Amiot of Kissimmee, Florida; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Geno was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Sandy on August 21, 2017.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday, August 24, 2020 at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road, in Wilmington between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Face masks requirements and measures of safe social distancing practices will be in order, and the funeral home staff will assist the family not to exceed the safe number set forth for the visitation.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, in Wilmington. A live stream of the Mass will be available at 10:00 a.m. by logging onto Geno’s memorial page.
Burial with full military honors will immediately follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, where Geno will be laid to rest with his wife.
