Melvina Cobb-Long

Age 94 of Chicago Heights and formerly of Gardner, passed away Thursday evening, May 14, 2020 at her home.

Born May 1, 1926 in Decatur, Illinois, Melvina was educated in Bloomington at the Soldiers and Sailors Home until moving to Wilmington, Wesley Township. She then relocated to Morris, where she went on to graduate from Morris Community High School with the Class of 1945. Melvina worked at the William Fox Center in Dwight as a Mental Health Technician before attending Joliet Community College, where she earned her LPN. She then gained employment at Silver Cross Medical Center, where she retired as an LPN.

Melvina was a member of the South Suburban Gem and Mineral Society, and in addition to her love of making jewelry, Melvina taught Lapidary Arts at Joliet Junior College and William Holland School of Lapidary Arts. She was a published author of three books on wire wrapping, and enjoyed traveling, fishing and gardening. She was fond of animals and cherished time spent with family.

Survivors include her daughters: Vickie Cobb (Arnulfo “Lobo”) and Wanda (Ron) Poulos; step-children: Gary Long, Mark Long and Sandra Stephan; six grandchildren: Billy Manegold, Jr., Diane (Gary) Lowery, Christine McCartney, Aaron Cobb, Sarah (Tom) Corcoran and Philip (Amanda) Salas; (8) great grandchildren; (9) great-great grandchildren, and several step-grandchildren as well as dear friends: Sam and Patti Davisson; Patrice Shapen and Tom and Rose Hoyt.

Melvina was preceded in death by her parents; foster parents; first husband, Cyrus Cobb; second husband, Roy Leon Long; her son William Cobb; one brother, Harold and one great-great granddaughter Leeah Carter.

Private family services will be held and she will be laid to rest in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery
